The style was born in post-war Yokosuka, Japan, when American servicemen commissioned local tailors to embroider their jackets with Japanese cultural imagery like dragons, tigers, and Mount Fuji.

Sukajan jackets use high-density embroidered storytelling motifs rooted in Japanese visual culture, usually on satin with reversible or contrast design language. Standard bomber jackets focus on utility; Sukajan jackets are wearable art, with each piece carrying cultural symbolism in its embroidery.

The style traces back to post-war Yokosuka and blends American military history, Japanese artisan embroidery, and traditional Japanese symbols into one collectible garment form. UNESCO-style craft recognition has not been formally granted, but the technique is taught generationally in Japanese embroidery schools.

'Suka' (スカ) comes from Yokosuka, the Japanese port city where the jackets originated. 'Jan' (ジャン) is a shortening of jumper / jacket. Together, Sukajan literally means 'Yokosuka jacket'.

A varsity jacket is American collegiate athletic outerwear with chenille letter patches and ribbed cuffs in wool/leather. A Sukajan is a Japanese satin bomber with large embroidered motifs and Eastern symbolism. Both share the bomber silhouette, but Sukajan emphasises art and storytelling while varsity emphasises team identity.

The Japanese dragon (Ryū) is a benevolent guardian — symbolising wisdom, strength, water mastery, and divine protection. Unlike Western dragons, Ryū is not destructive; it represents balance and good fortune.

Koi (Nishikigoi) symbolise perseverance, ambition, and transformation. Japanese legend says koi that swim upstream and leap the Dragon Gate transform into dragons — making koi a powerful emblem of resilience and personal growth.

Mount Fuji (Fujisan) represents eternal stability, beauty, and Japan's national identity. On a Sukajan it usually appears with cherry blossoms or moonlight, signalling stillness and aspiration.

The oni is a folkloric demon — fierce in appearance but functionally protective. Oni masks (Oni-men) are used in festivals to ward off misfortune and invite blessings. As a Sukajan motif, the oni is bold, defiant, and culturally rich.

If you are between sizes, size up. Embroidered Sukajan jackets are not stretchy — extra room around the shoulders and chest preserves both comfort and embroidery shape. For layering, always size up.

Japanese sizes generally run one full size smaller than US/EU equivalents. Sukaizen normalises sizing to international standards, so an L on Sukaizen is comparable to a US L (chest ~42–44 in / 107–112 cm). Always check the per-product measurements.

Premium polyester satin with a smooth, light-catching outer surface, fully lined for comfort. The embroidery uses high-density polyester thread guided by a mix of programmed machinery and hand-finishing for detailed motifs.

Our embroidery is hand-guided rather than 100% hand-stitched. A skilled artisan oversees each motif as it is built up across multiple thread passes, with hand-finishing on edges and detail areas. This balances heritage craftsmanship with consistent quality.

Most Sukaizen Sukajan motifs require 8–18 hours of embroidery time depending on stitch density, colour count, and motif complexity. Special-edition pieces may exceed 24 hours.

Some Sukaizen styles are reversible — the secondary side typically shows a tonal motif or solid satin. Reversibility is noted on each product page where applicable.

Cold hand wash with mild detergent OR delicate dry clean only. Avoid high heat drying. Lay flat to dry. Store on padded or broad-shoulder hangers to preserve shape and thread tension. Never iron embroidered areas directly — use steam from a distance only.

We do not recommend machine washing. The agitation can stress embroidery threads and the satin can wrinkle. If you must, use a delicates bag, cold water, and a gentle cycle with no spin.

Store on a padded hanger inside a breathable garment bag in a cool, dry, low-light closet. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture, and avoid direct sunlight, which can fade embroidery threads.
